The Budapest Wolves have started their 2015 season in a promising manner on Saturday afternoon by beating Austria’s Styrian Bears 30-14. Heavy winds did not favor the passing game, so most of the action took place on the ground.
This game was unique in the way that it was our first meaningful competition after our eventful offseason, during which lots of players made it onto our roster who were not listed there before. Many of them arrived from other teams, but even more were members of our championship winning juniors team last year. That is in accordance with our efforts of providing playing time to our young players, many of whom play in both the junior and the adult team. And of course the list of additions would not be complete without mentioning Darrell Tate, who came over all the way from Tennessee and established his status by scoring two TDs in the season opener.
This is what Darrell had to say about his first impressions in Hungary:
“So far my experience in Hungary has been completely amazing. Budapest is the most beautiful city I have ever lived in, and definitely the largest. I am starting to find out how to navigate my way through such a large city. Growing up, I always lived in a small city. I have received a tremendous amount of support from my teammates and coaching staff. They are always there to help me at any time whenever I need something, and even when I think I don't need anything.”
This is what Darrell had to say about the first game he played here:
“I was satisfied with how we came out and played against the Bears. They seemed to have caught us off guard in the first half, but we were able to make adjustments and capitalize on the win. The offensive line and receivers did an amazing job creating holes for myself, allowing me to be a productive running back. All I need is a hole, then as you can see, the rest is up to me. I actually impressed myself with the long "beastmode" type TD run I had. Overall, I am happy with my performance as well as the team's. However, there are always things to improve on. We had some moments where we were off the field in 3 plays. We have to continue to find ways to keep the drive alive. Also, I need to be a bit more patient with my offensive line, and finish my runs as hard as I can to gain extra yardage. We have a tough opponent coming up, and we will find out what is necessary in order to win.”

Indeed that second TD run was impressive. It was not the usual breakaway run where the running back leaves all the defenders behind early. When he was about 20 yards away from the end zone, I thought they are bringing him down. I was wrong. He somehow spun out of their squeeze, broke some more tackles and marched into the end zone.
In our next game we will kick our Hungarian campaign off facing the Nyíregyháza Tigers this Saturday at home. They picked up a bunch of import players (Ukrainians and Americans) in the offseason, and also have a new coach from North America, so it will be a tough fought game for sure.

The game will be held on 4.4.2015 at 5 p.m. at Angyalföldi Sport- és Szabadidő Központ, 1139 Budapest, XIII. kerület, Rozsnyai utca 4.
